M. Jayachandran and Nemom Pushparaj have been a win-win team since `Gourisankaram.' Jayachandran points out that though he has composed many award-wining songs and several hits, he has not had the opportunity to compose for musicals like `Bharatham' or `His Highness Abdullah.' "`Perumazhakalam' and `Neivedyam' were two films that had many lovely songs but `Banaras' is quite special. Of five songs composed for the film, two have been sung by Shreya Ghoshal.

Her hard work, voice and attention to diction were exemplary. Since Amritha is a Mumbai-bred girl, I did not want a Malayali to sing her songs. Shreya was an ideal choice. Since the film is set in Varanasi, all the songs have a Hindustani or North Indian folk music feel and rhythm," says Jayachandran.

One of the songs have been sung by the "award-wining team of Vijay Yesudas and Swetha Mohan" and one by K.J. Yesudas, adds Jayachandran
